In Texas, a roof is not just a home improvement project. It is a system that protects the whole house: the covering, the underlayment, the flashings, the ventilation, the valleys, the walls, the chimneys, the gutters, and every small detail that keeps water out and comfort in. Storms may be what pushes a homeowner to call, but storms should never be the business model. Legitimate roofing is not here today and gone tomorrow. It is the craft of understanding the entire roof and exterior system, then doing the work carefully enough that the homeowner can trust it long after the crew leaves.
I started Austin Roofing Contractors in 2002 as me, myself, and I. Back then, if I stayed close to the work and paid attention to the crew, we could usually deliver a good roof. But as storms became more frequent and the Texas market got busier, the industry shifted. More people wanted to play the role of roofing contractor, more bodies were needed on roofs, and there was no real system for knowing who understood roofing as a complete trade and who was simply chasing the next job.
That never sat right with me. I tried to keep doing things the right way, but the labor side of roofing had become impossible to control. Crews were fragmented, experienced workers were stretched thin, and people who should still have been learning were being pushed into leadership too soon. Workers moved from crew to crew depending on who was paying more that day, while too much of the money disappeared before it reached the people doing the work. In a system like that, real quality cannot be expected; it has to be supervised, corrected, and paid for by someone who refuses to look the other way. When a crew came up short, I would often have to bring in other workers after they left to fix and finish what had not been done right. That was a costly way to operate, but it was the price of caring when the system around me did not. The workers know that if one contractor expects too much, there is another one down the road willing to look the other way as long as the job gets done.
But I could not accept that as the ending. Over the last five years, through mentorship, observation, study, lawsuits, hard lessons, and survival, I began to see the problem more clearly. The issue was bigger than one crew, one job, or one bad season. The whole model was upside down. Roofing had become too dependent on speed, volume, and a revolving labor model instead of training, supervision, and workmanship. It reminded me of the car industry in the late seventies, when greed and speed seemed to matter more than building something dependable.
The market today is proving that the old way is not enough. Homeowners are not just buying shingles or responding to a storm. They are trusting someone with the details that decide whether a roof lasts, leaks, breathes, drains, and protects the home. That includes repairs, replacements, metal roofing, tile, slate, flat roofs, chimneys, walls, flashings, gutters, ventilation, and the judgment to know what the house actually needs. They need a company that can explain the process, document the conditions, supervise the work, protect the details, and stand behind the result.
That is the company I am rebuilding. Rebuilding, to me, means building from the foundation up, not from the sale down. It means starting with capable people, practical operations, and work that can begin producing value quickly while the larger team is being built. The goal is not to depend on outside support forever, but to use it wisely at the beginning so the business can become self-sufficient the right way. Not the fastest roofing company. Not the cheapest. Not the loudest. A company built around getting it right: trained people, clear communication, better documentation, real supervision, honest estimates, and roofs installed with the care a home deserves. If this resonates with you — whether you are a homeowner, a crewman, a crew leader, a supplier, a potential partner, or simply someone who believes Central Texas deserves better — reach out to me, and let’s talk. Texas deserves a roofing company built to stay, built to understand the whole roof, and built to get it right.
When approached thoughtfully, a new roof offers more than protection. It restores confidence, elevates curb appeal, and brings the reassurance that the home is prepared for whatever comes next.
