Austin Roofing Contractors – Your Roof – Your Way – Options Unlimited

100 Years Ago, this House was Built in Austin

A Roof that Will Last the Next 100 Years

This Austin home was built in 1925, one hundred years ago!

Austin Roofing Contractors installed a zinc roof that will likely last the next 100 years. Zinc is a great choice to use in applications like this, its natural patina creates an oxide layer that protects the zinc’s exposure to the elements.

This patina amazingly provides a neutral gray look that is pleasing and enhances the architectural appeal .

Historic roofing has many lessons for us. And at Austin Roofing Contractors we try to embrace the old yet look to the future to find ways that will enhance what we have learned from the past.

By using zinc, the way leaded sheet metal was once used, we are merging the past with the future.

Metal Roofs, Class 4 Impact Resistant & Built to Last

You have likely heard it said, “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.”

Likewise, a roof is only as lasting as its weakest part.

And that is why at Austin Roofing Contractors we build our standing-seam metal roofs with double-locking panels to enable the use of split panels where zinc flashing assemblies can be utilized.

Hear, as an example, you see the steps in using a split panel around a plumbing vent pipe, but the process is the same whether a plumbing pipe, a B-Vent or even a skylight.

The pliable zinc flashing is sandwiched between the two panels creating a shingle process that sheds water in the place of blocking water and will last for decades and generations.

This is the art & engineering of a metal roof that is built to last, . . truly a “Lifetime” standing seam metal roof.

Notice the plumbing vent pipe, the B-Vent, and the skylight all have been installed with split sheets to create a flashing method that is water-tight without relying on caulks or sealants, and the difference is that they will last for a lifetime and more.

All In a Day's Work - Austin Roofing Contractors - Composition Crew

All in a day’s work at Austin Roofing Contractors.

The most common roof replacements are composition shingles, and that’s what we are discussing today! But a good roof replacement isn’t just about replacing the shingles. Many times, there are other issues that need to be addressed.

An ice storm created damage to the structure of this roof. A large fascia along a rake-edge had pulled dangerously loose by the electrical service line hit by a falling tree limb during the ice storm.

Taking care of this not only meant replacing the fascia but preparing the wood for paint, choosing the colors, in other words restoring the roof structure before replacing the roof.

There were other things that required custom fabrication to construct a new roof that will last.

This all took place while most of the crew was removing the old roofing, checking for issues and addressing them making your home ready for the new roof.

A new ridge opening has been cut and is now ready for the ridge-vent installation.

A watertight underlayment+ a watertight roof are both provided as a part of our roofing system even if the insurance did not include it in your claim, this is an Austin Roofing Contractors standard.

At the end of the workday, we make sure every detail has been properly taken care of.

Your roof is now protected by our quality assurance and backed by our workmanship guarantee.

At Austin Roofing Contractors we do it right – every time!

Entry Wall-One Part of a Roof/Exterior Renovation

Villa Corazon is an amazing estate perched on the bluffs with a westward view of Lake Travis in Austin Texas.

This Roof-Based Restoration Project was designed, managed, supervised and constructed by Austin Roofing Contractors and this video focuses on a single part of this home’s restoration, the entry wall.

It is not uncommon for a leak to exist without becoming apparent. This was the case on this entry wall. It was only after a hot dry summer followed by a torrential downpour that leaks began to show up, and the first visible leak was not the entry wall, but the dome above.

Upon the discovery of this single leak a full inspection of the roof, the roof to wall flashings and the related wall claddings took place. This was our first visit to Villa Corazon.

It is not enough to install stonework over traditional underlayment to protect a home from intrusion of water. Not only was an ice & water protectant, WIP-300 by Carlisle Products used, but a structural steel beam was engineered, designed and fabricated to place over the wall as a cap to support and stabilize the stonework, the crown that finishes the entry wall.

Notice also, the extensive use of copper with the stucco wall to tile roof creating a counter flashing at the base of the wall to roof transition.

At Austin Roofing Contractors we pride ourselves in the creation and development of lasting solutions for residential projects big or small.

HAIL DAMAGE ROOF REPLACEMENT / Facia, Siding, Paint & Gutters

Austin Roofing Contractors reroofs homes, but we do a lot more. If your home needs roof-related repairs we take great pride in being able to help you take care of your home, not just replace shingles. The neighbors across the back yard fence referred us to this owner.

The team at ARC did extensive repairs there too, so when we met, we discussed the roof, the insurance, the costs of doing more work including the fascia repairs, chimney siding and flashings replacement, paint with a designer color from Sherwin Williams, and the replacement and upgrade of the gutters.

Helping you take care of your home is what we are all about. Contact us if we can help you with a similar project.

B-Vent Base Flashings: One of the Most Common Cause of Roof Leaks

We Are Different – YES. We are Tradesmen – ROOFERS, Not Roof Exchangers. We consider ourselves contributors to the Home Improvement Business, not shingle replacers. One of Austin Roofing Contractors Motto is RESTORE – CORRECT – IMPROVE. A b-Vent or the Gas Appliance Vent, (GAS heater vent or GAS water heater vent) where it vents through the roof it requires a double walled pipe, and at the roofing it requires a flashing. So, the next step is installing shingles. A few shingles go on so you can see how this works with the b-vent flashing. The shingles used here are pre-cut and we are just going to set them in place, hoping they don’t slide down on this low-slope roof. This is (in hand) the actual base flashing that will incorporate into the shingling of your roof. This, the second base flashing does not need to go under the underlayment. This, the second base flashing in this system is a part of the shingle system. The first layer is already installed and is part of the underlayment system. The flashing at this level, the shingle system, will be installed using screws with neoprene washers, not nails. So, now you have two levels of protection, a water-tight underlayment before the shingles, and a shingle system that is water-tight. The BIG ADVANTAGE of this is when you have the first layer, the underlayment on your house, whether a rains shower pops up or the roof needs to be left open overnight due to size or issues of getting it done in a day, your house is protected. Plus, not mentioned in the video BUT a big deal is the fact that the sub-flashing or the first flashing protects to keep underlayment, (a fire hazard), from touching the B-Vent pipe, and second from the time the underlayment goes on, your home is protected..

We Love a Challenge – An Octagon Standing Seam Metal Roof

How many OCTAGON roofs have we ever roofed? This is our first. The shape definitely presented a challenge, but it’s really basic standing seam roofing to the experienced metal roofer. Yes, a lot of hand tooling and a lot of cutting, but that’s ok with us! It was a wonderful project fabricating 24-gauge galvalume. This is a class-4-impact resistant roof. The project included other restoration work including masonry repairs siding and fascia. This is a beautiful property, hidden in the trees in Rollingwood, across the  river from Downtown Austin. The privacy so close to Austin is to be treasured.

A unique and memorable project!

ARC’s Top Choice for a Restaurant’s Roof: EPDM

EPDM is, for some restaurants, often the best choice. In this case, a Which Wich sandwich shop that does not have excess greasy build up accumulating on the roof, for them, it is a perfect roof. It is available at a lower cost than PVC or TPO, and lasts well too, plus the dark color looks better longer.

Austin Roofing Contractors recommends PVC, (Polyvinyl Chloride). roofing for restaurants that have a high level of in-house food preparation things like greasy meats or the heavy use of oils for cooking due to its resistance to various substances, including animal fats. PVC is a thermoplastic roofing system and is known for its durability and resistance to chemicals and harsh weather.

There is one more, TPO, (Thermoplastic Polyolefin), which falls in place as the middle choice between EPDM and PVC, both in costs and  maintenance.

Both TPO and PVC comes in white, which is reflective which in the Texas sun pays some dividends, however, we highly recommend that a place of business today, just like homes, a well-insulated roof structure creating a complete envelope around all AC Duct work is the best choice to beat the heat – and not to rely on white for that purpose on restaurants as they always turn dark and look dirty soon.

Austin Roofing Contractors Replacing a Tile Roof

This is the process of replacing a tile roof and making sure all the parts of the house that fit around the roof, or the roof around them are in good condition to build a roof that will outlast the original and then some! ARC’s Classic One Hundred Year Solution for Flat Roofs: ZINC

The home in the video was built in Austin Texas in 1925, Wow, that is one hundred years ago, it’s currently July 2025 as I prepare to post this video.

The porch that we reroofed could have been a later addition, (this I do not know, maybe someone who does can let me know.) This soldered zinc roof replaces the heavy-leaded sheet metal roofs of that era, because lead is now known to be toxic.

Zinc is a great choice to use in applications like this because the natural patina that occurs creates an oxide layer that protects the zinc’s exposure to the elements and amazingly provides a neutral gray look that is more pleasing to the architectural appeal than the brightness shown in the photos used in this video.

Historic roofing has a lot of lessons for us to learn, and at Austin Roofing Contractors we try to embrace them yet look towards the future to see if there are things we know today that will enhance what we know from the past.

By using zinc this way, we are merging the past with our future.

Roofing a Dome with Standing Seam Copper

Roofing a Copper Dome. To save on costs, Austin Roofing Contractors is still roofing copper domes and other similar shapes by hand. Old fashioned, yes I suppose that is true, but effective, and water-tight assured. It is a process to construct something like the roofing of a large copper dome. It requires craftsmen and a leader that knows what they are doing.

The dome roofing we replaced here was simply due to poor craftsmanship. The previous dome copper roof was just over eight years old. Copper lasts more than a lifetime, when doing it right matters, who you choose matters most. We Do Great Work, is not only one of our slogans, but also what we do, and we take great priding in this!

As you will see in the video, the copper came from large rolls, then hand crafted into shape then raised by hand to the roof-top one at a time. It is good to note that this dome roof was one of three to redo along with the replacement of a concrete tile roof upgrading to a tile roof. There were many other roof related repairs, but we have saved that for other videos to come.

A copper dome roof is rare, but they are remarkable to see on the right homes such as this villa sitting below the Oasis Restaurant on the bluffs at Lake Travis. For any questions about copper and copper domes, be sure to contact us for questions:

Reroofing a Home in NW Austin, Village 2, of Anderson Mill, a Roof Restoration & Update

Built in 1975, as you would expect, it was time to do a little more than simply replace the shingles, there were issues, and exposed beams – that are difficult to maintain that needed to be dealt with. More than a reroof, more than a restoration, it needed minor updates to make the house look fitting in today’s Real Estate Market. It sold within two weeks.

Whether reroofing to protect your home and family or to sell your current home on your way to your next home, nothing makes a house look ran down more than a tired old roof.

Wood Shake Replacement, a Stone Coated Steel Roofing, Shake Style

“Four Years After” the installation of this metal roof, a stone coated metal roof, we visited to capture it once again with a video. It was a bright Texas Sun-Filled day, so many of the angles washes the color, but near the end, as we captured without the sun’s reflection, you will get a good look at how well this stone coated steel is maintaining its powerful look. This product is now a part of the Westlake Royal Roofing Materials Company, a fantastic company to work with. It is their Unified Steel Stone Coated Roofing. Unified Steel Video: https://westlakeroyalroofing.com/unified-steel/ This product has an A Rating for fire protection and Class 4 Impact resistant. Here is a video, “Why Unified Steel Roofing Products” Check it out: https://youtu.be/kPE8y-qeM4E To see and hear the customer’s comments on our work, you can check out this video: https://youtu.be/KfIcGoKWa90 This product is highlighted on Austin Roofing Contractors’ homepage: www.austinroofingcontractors.com This stone coated steel product also comes in a Spanish tile shape. To see a project by Austin Roofing Contractors click here to see our video: https://youtu.be/ZtMvaZaa-MU You will notice it was called Gerard at that time. It is now a Unified Steel Product like the one above. This product installs lifted above the decking and is shiny metal on the underneath side. This creates a radiant barrier for your entire roof. The energy savings will last a lifetime. Unified Steel’s Stone Coated Roofing is “Light weight” which means it can be installed on nearly any home. For example, the look of tile is great for the right home, but clay or concrete tile are heavy, too heavy for typical construction of a home that may have a composition shingle on it now. But with Stone Coated Steel, you can have the look of tile, without reengineering your roof and the cost of reconstruction. Metal Roofing by Austin Roofing Contractors is something we do with high passion. It is lasting, and the right selection can truly be a lifetime roof for your home, yes even in Texas!

Standing Seam Metal Roof by Austin Roofing Contractors

Through much experience, and by experimenting with the various forms of standing seam metal roofing installations, the owner of Austin Roofing Contractors Gary Whillock has definitively concluded there is no good second place to Double-Locked Standing Seam Metal Roofing if you want the best of the best. Double-Locked is Simply the Best. (We are considering longevity, the maintenance free – life of a standing seam metal roof.) There are many reasons why, but the first and foremost, it requires skilled metal roof craftsmen to do the work. Common laborers are hired for most snap-loc style standing seam panels and the results over the past decade and a half have proven this time and again. There have been numerous homes where the lack of installation quality has lead to the entire new metal roof being ripped off and replaced due to this issue. It is true, double-locking requires additional labor, it is true this is more costly. But it is also true that the percentage of cost is small. The real reason most no longer use the double lock method is because the skills it requires are not being taught within the industry. Sheffield Metals is leading the industry in providing double-locking standing seam equipment, now made affordable to roofers throughout the United States, and Austin Roofing Contractors support whole-heartedly this effort to bring back what we have known for years. https://sheffieldmetals.com/learning-… Notice that most manufacturers, including Berridge, the most significant manufacturer of metal roofing in Texas, now known around the world for the water tightness of their proven systems, say do not use anything but double-lock on the lower pitched roofs. It is time to discuss the reality that without double-lock, the best practices of standing seam metal roofing cannot be used around pipes, vents, skylights and any other penetration on metal roof projects. If you would like to see more about this, comment below we are considering the best ways to bring this information to the light of day! Roofing Prices Compare by Types of Roofs

Starting from the most basic dimensional roofing shingles:

1st Roof, Dimensional Shingles

2nd Roof, Dimensional Shingles, Designer Color

3rd Roof, Architectural Shingles, Ultra – Performance (Thicker) Collage of Roofs

4th Roof, F-Wave Rubber Roof, Class 4, Impact Resistant

5th Roof, DaVinci Composite Roof, Same Rating as #4, But Results Better

6th Roof, Brava Composite Roof, Similar to DaVinci – Tile – Light Weight

7th Roof, Stone Coated Steel, Class 4 Impact Rated, Long Lasting, fades %

9th Roof, 24 Guage Galvanized Steel, Class 4 Impact Rated, Lasts & Lasts

10th Roof, 24 Guage Galvanized Steel, Class 4 Impact Rated, Lasts & Lasts

11th Roof, 24 Guage Steel, Kynar Coated, Class 4 Impact Rated, Last & . ..

12th Roof, 24 Guage Steel, Kynar Coated, Class 4 Impact Rated, Last & . ..

These are only a few roofs, all light weight to fit nearly any home. There are many, many more products so be sure to ask. Austin Roofing Contractors also does Concrete Tile Roofs, Clay Tile Roofs, Slate, Copper, Zinc, and many new versions of Impact resistant shingles. Some are new, we tend to wait and see, some we know well, and feel comfortable recommending.

Let’s review the price of the roofs above as they increase in price, typically from 1st Roof to the 11th & 12th Roof by double. There are a lot of factors that also effect the price of roofing. Think about it like this, shop for a Porsche vehicle, and you will see there are no limits to the options, same with roofing.

Most roofing companies, driven by storms now, usually provide samples only for the most common, the #1 – 3 maybe, often just one low-cost choice. Now let’s review the cost to life. The higher the number the longer it will last, up to 10xs Roof 1. So, the cost must be looked at by how long you want it to last. Many of our customers after we have replaced basic composition roofing three times and more, are now choosing to upgrade to more lasting roofs. Our recommendation is move away from the basic composition, the storms seem to be picking up, and the shingles are mass produced, you could compare that to the lower end cars. Not really what you want to protect $500,000 property or more.

But sometimes, it makes sense. We would not recommend installing an upgrade and putting the house on the market, it rarely brings back full investment up front, but it will help the house sell quickly. There are many things to consider, don’t be pushed into any decision, take your time, work it through. Choose to work with someone who knows the many options you have, you will be glad you did.

Composition Shingle Roofs that Last

Austin Roofing Contractors did this roof some time ago, and we had the chance to look at it again nearly 6 years after it was completed, and we could hardly believe what we saw. The roof is a GAF Timberline ULTRA, and compared to standard dimensional shingles the results were remarkable! It looked new. The ability to weather storms with the designer shingles are often much greater than the mass market dimensional shingles and way better than the strip shingles, now fading from use. A strong crew, supervised by Austin Roofing Contractors production manager did everything to near perfection. After six years, the only issue was the skylight you see on the video was broken, no doubt, due to a passing hail storm. The skylight has now been replaced and upgraded to Velux curb mount skylight with glass – not plastic. You will notice too on the pipe vent flashings, the shine more than most, that is because they are made of zinc. The management team at Austin Roofing Contractors changed over a decade ago from lead pipe flashings to zinc, which we already used on Metal Roofs, to prevent squirls from chewing holes near the top of the vents. It’s one more step towards perfection of our installations and is available for all the roof types we do. Roof Types include, composition shingles, standard or upgraded like this one. Standing Seam Metal Roofs in 24-gauge steel, in galvalume or colors by Kynar Coatings. Stone Coated Steal, Lightweight Steel Shingles, Composite Shingles or Tile, Concrete Tile, Clay Tile, Slate, Copper and many more. The video represents the ability to upgrade to better roofing products moving away from the mass market average shingle, into one that will last for a couple of decades or more. (Despite the lifetime warrantees seen on many packages of roofing products, we don’t see them lasting as long as the claim.) Reality is, mass market is mass market. There are so many products worthy of homes of $500,000 or more, it make little sense to use those that we know are short lived. Be sure to ask for all the information you need to make a good decision on your next roof purchase, it could truly be the last one you will ever need to buy. Contact Austin Roofing Contractors today. Austin Roof Restoration, Improvements and Upgrades Mt. Bonnell-Austin Texas

Restoration – means to correct the issues, solve the problems like leaks around the chimneys, leak on the low-sloped roof areas, replace missing mortar in chimney bricks, install new flashings throughout the roof, roof to wall, roof to chimney, chimney crickets, drip edge, replace any bad decking and more. Improvements are making things work well that didn’t before. Venting for example was a major concern on the project, as the attic was ideal for storage, a wall in attic from two areas but the heat was not tolerable.

The entire perimeter of the house was retrofitted for intake vents. This made a dramatic difference lowering the attic temperature more than 25 degrees by letting the hot air rise, bringing in cooler outdoor air, venting the hot air through dormer vents. There was not sufficient room for ridge vents, and it would have taken nearly 40 air hawks to gain the same square inch as the five dormer vents provided. This was much preferred by the owner for aesthetics than a busy roof full of small vents.

There were upgrades like instead of the common dimensional shingles, the roof shingles are GAF Timberline Ultra, a significant difference in manufacturing and can also protect better against hail damage. The B-Vents, (gas exhaust vents), were upgraded to Austing Roofing Contractors standard double flashed base, and counter flashing pipe, eliminating the need for caulking that usually cracks over time. The gutters were replaced with new 5-inch Ogee style and powder coated steel screens.

This is a roof built to weather storms and to last for many years. The excellence of the crew who installed it is of the highest level. The roof is constructed to outperform most and is built to last. Austin Roofing Contractors takes great pride in providing the best built roofs in Central Texas.
